Why Is HIPS Highly Impact Resistant ?

Oct 23, 2023|

HIPS, is an opaque thermoplastic, a thermoplastic material made of elastomer-modified polystyrene. Thermoplastics are plastics that become plastic at a certain temperature, solidify when cooled, and can repeat the process.HIPS is a small amount of polybutadiene grafted onto a polystyrene substrate and has many properties:

  • Impact resistance
  • Odorless, tasteless, hard material, good dimensional stability after forming
  • Excellent high dielectric insulation
  • Amorphous low water absorption material
  • Good gloss and easy to paint

Reasons for shock resistance

Impact-resistant polystyrene is an impact-resistant polystyrene product produced by adding polybutadiene rubber particles to polystyrene. This kind of polystyrene product will add micron-sized rubber particles and connect the polystyrene and rubber particles together through grafting. When impacted, the tip stress of crack propagation is released by the relatively soft rubber particles. Therefore, crack propagation is hindered and impact resistance is improved.

In general, HIPS has been widely used in electronics, electrical appliances, instruments, cultural and educational supplies, and instruments due to its excellent electrical insulation, colorability, processing fluidity, good resistance to water, light, and chemical corrosion, good rigidity, and certain mechanical strength. Packaging, toys and household products.
