Which Is Better, PP Or PE?
Aug 08, 2024| Plastics can often seem complex and confusing when it comes to which is best for your application. We all know that no two packaging is exactly alike, which means different applications require different kinds of plastics and polyethylene materials. Many customers wonder which is better, PE film or PP film, when choosing a material film to use in producing plastic packaging.
But it's not about which is better, it's about what your product is? What do you want to do? Both plastics are considered the best choice for packaging production. Below, we'll take a look at the two most common plastics - polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) - and the main differences between them.
1. The Introduction Polyethylene (PE)
The density of polypropylene (PP) is between 0.895 and 0.92 g.cm. The density of polyethylene can vary from a low of 0.857 g/cm3 and to a maximum of 0.0975 gm/cm3. As you can see, PP has the lowest density. Polyethylene (PE) plastic is flexible, durable, and tear-resistant. These three characteristics are each a necessity when you need to packaging heavy-duty items within your poly bags. That means that industrial companies often utilize polyethylene storage bags for large, heavy items, such as industrial machining parts.
2. The Introduction Polypropylene (PP)
A polypropylene bag is high clarity and crystal clear in order to enhance the image of whatever product is inside. This PP bag offers a highly protective barrier against both moisture and vapors. These poly bags delay evaporation and dehydration to preserve the freshness and taste of packaged foods. Generally, PP plastics are stronger, clearer, and more expensive than their PE plastic counterparts. Polypropylene bags are great for the following industries - food, electronics and electronics manufacturing, hospitals, agriculture, and more.
3. Plastics for All Applications
Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP) are used in much more than just poly bags. From stretch film to tape, plastic sheeting to strapping, plastic is everywhere. Better yet, both materials are recyclable, which makes them a great choice for those with sustainability in mind. Check out the links below to shop our products and see how we can help you.
4. Optical Properties:
PP can be made translucent when uncolored but it's not as transparent as acrylic or other plastic. Often colored pigments are added.
PE on the other hand can clear, milky-opaque, or opaque. The color is dependent on the thermal history and film thickness.
5. Most Common Polyethylene Products
Every day we have contact with PP or PE. Polypropylene is used to make bottles, hinges, packaging materials, parts for automobiles, clear bags, ropes, rugs, roofing membranes, geotextiles, erosion control mats and so much more.
Polyethylene is vastly used in packaging (plastic bags, plastic films), geomembranes, and plastic sheeting to protect the environment for construction projects.
