Where Is Polycarbonate Used And What Are The Processing Methods
Nov 07, 2024| 1. The definition of PC
Polycarbonate is widely used due to its environmentally friendly processing and recyclability. PC is known for its ability to retain color and strength for a long time even under pressure. Polycarbonate (PC) plastic is a naturally transparent amorphous thermoplastic. PC is commonly used in plastic lenses for eyeglasses, automotive parts, protective gear, greenhouses, digital optical disks (CD, DVD and Blu-ray) and exterior lighting fixtures.

Polycarbonate also has very good heat resistance and can be combined with flame retardant materials without significant material degradation.
Polycarbonate (PC) was first prepared in 1953 by Dr. H. Schnell of Bayer AG in Germany and DW Fox of General Electric Company in the United States. It is a high-performance, tough, amorphous and transparent thermoplastic polymer.
2. The characteristics of PC
PC is widely used as engineering plastics due to its following characteristics:
High impact strength
High dimensional stability
Good electrical properties
Good low temperature and heat resistance, flame retardant, easy to process, good sound insulation
3. The application of PC
PC is made into large bulb covers, protective glass, left and right eyepiece barrels of optical instruments. In addition, it is also used as a transparent material for planes.
PC has good insulation and can be made into insulating connectors, coil frames, tube holders, insulating sleeves, telephone housings and parts, and mining lamp battery shells. In addition, PC is also used to manufacture precision parts of communication equipment such as CD-ROMs, telephones, computers, video recorders, telephone exchanges, signal relays, etc. PC film is used for capacitors, insulating foreskins, tape recorders, color videotapes, etc.
PC can be made into bottle caps, tubes, bottles, as well as dental equipment, drug containers and surgical instruments. It can even be used as artificial kidneys, artificial lungs and other artificial organs.
In construction, PC can be made into double-walled hollow rods and greenhouse glass. In the textile industry, PC is suitable for making bobbins and textile machine bearings. In daily life, PC is a good material for making tableware, toys and models.
4. The processing methods for PC
Common methods for producing polycarbonate parts are:
Extrusion
Injection molding
Blow molding
Thermoforming
After the PC is melted, it is forced into a mold with high pressure to give it the desired shape. Drying is highly recommended before processing, i.e. drying at 120°C for 2-4 hours. The target moisture content should not exceed 0.02%.
To avoid material degradation, the ideal maximum residence time is 6-12 minutes, depending on the melt temperature chosen. The two main technologies involved in polycarbonate processing are injection molding and extrusion
