1. The definition of ABS and pom

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a thermoplastic engineering plastic made by copolymerizing three monomers:

-Acrylonitrile (A): provides chemical resistance and surface hardness.

- Butadiene (B: imparts impact resistance and toughness.

- Styrene (S): enhances processing fluidity and gloss.

 

POM (Polyoxymethylene), also known as "Saigang" or "acetal resin", is a highly crystalline thermoplastic engineering plastic, which is divided into two categories:

Homopolymer POM (such as DuPont Delrin®): polymerized from pure formaldehyde, with higher strength but poor alkali resistance.

Copolymer POM (such as BASF Ultraform®): copolymerized with formaldehyde and a small amount of ethylene oxide, with better hydrolysis resistance.

 

2. The two have different characteristics:

- Excellent comprehensive performance, balancing strength, toughness and surface finish.

- Resistant to weak acids and weak bases, but easily soluble in ketones and ester solvents (such as acetone).

- Flammable (need to add flame retardants), temperature range: -20°C to 80°C (long-term use).

POM characteristics

High rigidity, low friction coefficient, excellent creep resistance and wear resistance.

- Oil and solvent resistant (except strong acids and phenol), temperature range: -40°C to 100°C (up to 140°C for short periods of time).

- Flammable (UL94 HB grade), low hygroscopicity (0.2%-0.3%).

 

3. Main applications of two materials

- Electronic appliances: keyboard housing, charger housing, home appliance panels (such as refrigerator lining).

- Automotive parts: dashboards, interior trims, grilles (electroplating grade ABS is used for high gloss surfaces).

- Consumer goods: toys (such as Lego blocks), luggage, sports equipment.

3D printing: ABS filament is widely used due to easy post-processing (grinding, painting).

 

Main applications of pom

Mechanical parts: gears, bearings, pulleys (replacing metals and reducing noise).

Automotive industry: fuel system parts, door lock mechanisms, seat belt buckles.

Precision instruments: clock gears, printer rollers, medical devices (such as insulin pen parts). Daily necessities: zipper teeth, sprayer pump heads, pen clips.

 

4. The performance of the two materials:

1. Function of ABS plastic: ABS engineering plastic is an opaque ivory granular material, and its products can be colored in various colors with high gloss. The relative density of ABS is about 1.05, and the water absorption rate is low. ABS has good bonding with other materials and is easy to print, paint, and plate on the surface. The oxygen index of ABS is 18-20, which is a flammable polymer. The flame is yellow, with black smoke and a characteristic cinnamon smell.

2. Performance of POM plastic: POM has excellent electrical insulation and is almost unaffected by temperature and humidity; the dielectric constant and dielectric loss change very little in a large range of temperature, humidity and frequency; it has excellent arc resistance and can maintain high thermal stability.

 

5. Material selection suggestions

ABS: Wins with toughness and easy processing, suitable for appearance parts and impact-resistant scenes.

POM: Good at rigidity and wear resistance, specializing in precision machinery and wear-resistant parts.
